Subject: Servo Spindle Help

Hi all,

I've got difficulty getting my servo spindle to work with Mach3.

currently I'm running KFlop with a Kanalog serving as a BOB. Linear motion is controlled with step/dir through JP5 - this all works well.

However, I have recently bought an AC servo to replace the awful DC motor that was there previously. I intend on running it with step and direction through JP5 just like my linear motors, but have not had any success.

I can get the motor to run through KMotion's step response screen, but when attempting to set it up in Mach, I am completely out of my depth. I don't know where to start - I have set up a spindle in Mach previously, but NOT with a kflop, and it was a simple +-10V analog thing.

My question is:

How do I set up a spindle in Mach3 to run step/dir?

In addition to this, I also have another problem with that AC servo:

The drive seems to be creating so much noise (both audible and electrical) that it causes the KFlop to disconnect the moment it is enabled. It is so bad that I can hear the servo over my speakers!

I have followed correct wiring procedures to prevent ground loops, but it truly is unavoidable when the KFlop gets grounded through the USB anyway.

I have bought a USB Isolator (the Olimex type) which has helped, but still occasionally get issues when turning the servo on.

My second question is:

How do I deal with the harmful noise that the drive generates?

Any help to get me running is much appreciated.

Hi Lindsay,

If you can configure a KFLOP axis channel to control the spindle then the spindle can be controlled by issuing Jog commands to the axis. This makes all the spindle details transparent to the higher level programs and to Mach3. You can then use the Mach3 using Jogs examples.

So the first step is to configure an axis as Step/Dir and verify you can control the spindle by entering Jog commands on the Console Screen to run at any desired speed.
